Are you aware of the risks associated with sleep apnea and what you can do to help keep your teeth and gums safe? Sleep apnea typically arises with individuals who have a sleeping disorder in which irregular breathing patterns can arise while they sleep. In many cases, it can cause severe health risks including heart failure, stroke or heart attacks.

If you are a male over the age of 40, you may be at a high risk for sleep apnea. Other common risks for sleep apnea include a set of large tonsils or a large tongue, as well as a family history of the disorder or a nasal obstruction that is currently restricting airflow.

To help treat sleep apnea, visit our doctor for the use of oral appliances or other treatment options or appliances, such as continuous positive air pressure devices, also referred to as CPAPs, which can help improve breathing by supplying air through your nasal passages and keeping your airway open while you sleep. In other cases, treating sleep apnea may require adjusting your sleeping habits or may require surgery to help open your airways.
