Are you suffering from jaw pain? Jaw pain, especially chronic jaw pain, is an oral health condition that can be caused by numerous factors and can be severely debilitating not only for your smile but your lifestyle. Common symptoms of jaw pain include pain in and around your ear, headaches, tooth sensitivity, jaw tenderness and facial pain. In order to help treat jaw pain, it is important for your dentist to determine the cause of your pain.

There are numerous causes of jaw pain, including those that do not directly arise within your jaw. Some likely causes of jaw pain include sinus problems and nasal congestion that can indirectly affect the health and sensation of your jaw. In addition, toothaches, infections, bruxism, periodontal disease, TMJ disorders, oral accidents or injuries, arthritis, and infections can all lead to jaw and facial pain.

Once your dentist has determined the cause of your facial or jaw pain, treatments and recommendations can be administered. Oftentimes mouth guards, bite plates, and mouth protectors can be highly effective in treating jaw pain. Other forms of treatments include exercise therapies, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, muscle relaxants, and periodontal treatments. If you have severe jaw pain, root canal therapy and tooth extractions may be required.
